Cathey Yardley Design – Striped glass curve with orange and amber accents
Size – H20cm x L31cm
The tactile quality and raised texture on the striped glass pieces rely on a technique called ‘damming’. Dozens of narrow glass strips are placed side by side, on their narrow edge, on a glass base. Each of the four sides of the piece is held back by a ceramic brick or dam. This prevents the stacked glass from flowing out of shape as the kiln temperature reaches over 800 degrees centigrade. The piece then has to undergo a second firing over a mould to slump it onto the curved shape.
